Beach Hunting: A Memoir of My Most Memorable Finds
As a metal detectorist, one of my favorite places to hunt for treasures is the beach. There’s something about the salty air and the sound of waves crashing that makes it feel like an adventure every time I set out with my trusty metal detector in hand.
Over the years, I’ve found some incredible items on various beaches around the world – from old coins and jewelry to military artifacts and even a few unexpected discoveries. Here are just a few highlights from my most memorable beach hunts:
The Spanish Gold Coin
One summer afternoon, while detecting on a secluded stretch of sand near St. Augustine, Florida, I got a strong signal that led me to dig up what turned out to be an 18th-century Spanish gold coin! The piece was in excellent condition considering its age and had been buried deep beneath the sand for who knows how long.
The Civil War Button
Another exciting find came while hunting on Folly Beach in South Carolina. After several hours without much luck, I finally hit upon a target that turned out to be an old Civil War uniform button! It was heavily corroded but still recognizable as belonging to Confederate soldiers during the war.
The Lost Wedding Ring
One day at Huntington Beach State Park in California, a woman approached me asking if I could help find her lost wedding ring which she believed was somewhere along the shoreline where she’d been playing with her kids earlier in the day. Without hesitating, I agreed to help search for it using my trusty metal detector. After almost two hours of combing through wet sand all along the shorelines we finally located her ring which was buried nearly six inches deep!
These finds may seem small or insignificant when you think about them individually; however each item has its own story – they were once cherished possessions lost or forgotten over time by their owners before being found again decades later by someone like me.
Of course, not every beach hunt yields such exciting results. There are plenty of days where I come up empty-handed or only find a few coins and bottle caps. But that’s part of the thrill – you never know what you might discover on any given day.
If you’re interested in taking up beach hunting yourself, there are a few things to keep in mind. First and foremost is safety: always check local regulations and avoid areas where metal detecting is prohibited or dangerous, such as near power lines or steep cliffs.
It’s also important to invest in a quality metal detector that can handle the unique challenges of beach hunting. Saltwater and sand can wreak havoc on cheaper models, so look for one with waterproof capabilities and adjustable sensitivity settings.
Finally, be prepared to do some digging! Beaches tend to have a lot of junk buried beneath the sand, so it’s essential to have a good shovel or digging tool at your disposal. And don’t forget to bring along sunscreen, water bottles, snacks and other essentials for a comfortable outing!
