Trackables and Travel Bugs: The Wanderlust of Geocaching

If you’re a geocacher, then you’ve likely come across Trackables and Travel Bugs during your hunts. These little items travel from cache to cache, their journeys tracked online for all to see. But what are they exactly? And why do they inspire such wanderlust in the geocaching community?

Well, first things first: let’s define our terms.

A Trackable is any item that has been registered on Geocaching.com with a unique code engraved or printed on it. This code allows the item to be tracked online as it moves from cache to cache. Examples of Trackables include keychains, stickers, buttons, and even toy cars.

A Travel Bug is a specific type of Trackable that has its own unique icon on Geocaching.com. They often take the form of small metal tags or dog tags attached to a chain or other object – anything from a miniature Eiffel Tower to an actual bug (plastic ones only!).

So now that we know what these items are, why do geocachers love them so much?

For starters, they add an extra layer of excitement to the hunt. Finding a Travel Bug or other Trackable in a cache can feel like discovering buried treasure – especially if it’s one you’ve been hoping to find for a while.

But beyond that initial rush of joy, there’s something special about watching these items travel around the world. Each time someone picks up a Trackable or drops it off at another cache, they log their location and share their story online. It’s amazing how far some of these items can go; I’ve seen Travel Bugs make it from California all the way to Australia!

Of course, not every journey is smooth sailing. Sometimes Trackables get lost or stolen along the way – which is always heartbreaking for their owners. But even those mishaps can turn into adventures. I’ve heard stories of Trackables being found years later, in unexpected places like abandoned buildings or foreign countries.

So what can you do with a Travel Bug or other Trackable once you find it?

Well, the goal is to move it along to another cache – ideally one that’s further away than the last. But before you pick it up and start carrying it around, there are a few things to keep in mind:

1. Read the instructions: Each Trackable has its own mission or goal listed on Geocaching.com. Some may be trying to visit every state in the US, while others want to travel as far as possible from their starting point. Make sure you understand what your Trackable is hoping to accomplish before you set off with it.

2. Log your movements: When you pick up a Trackable or drop it off at a new cache, make sure to log your actions online (either through the official Geocaching app or website). This helps the owner track their item’s progress and ensures that other geocachers know where they can find it next.

3. Be respectful: Remember that these items belong to someone else – so treat them with care! Avoid leaving them in dangerous locations (like busy roads), and don’t hold onto them for too long without moving them along.

If you’re lucky enough to come across a Travel Bug with an interesting story or mission, consider helping it out by taking some photos of its journey and sharing them online. You never know who might be following along!
