Discrimination in Metal Detecting: Are You Using the “Right” Equipment?

Metal detecting is a fun and exciting hobby that can lead to some amazing discoveries. But did you know that there is discrimination within the metal detecting community based on the type of equipment you use? It’s true! Some detectorists believe that only certain types of machines are worthy of being used, while others are looked down upon.

For example, those who use entry-level detectors or older models are often seen as inferior to those who have top-of-the-line machines. This type of discrimination is not only unfair but also takes away from the joy and excitement of metal detecting.

Perhaps even more egregious is discrimination against those who use pinpointers instead of relying solely on their detector’s built-in pinpointer function. Pinpointers are handheld devices that allow for more precise location of a target once it has been identified by the main machine. However, some detectorists shun the use of pinpointers as “cheating” or unnecessary.

But let’s be real here: metal detecting should be all about having fun and finding treasures, regardless of what kind of equipment you’re using. Sure, top-of-the-line detectors may offer more features and better performance than entry-level ones, but that doesn’t mean they’re necessary for success in this hobby.

In fact, many experienced detectorists will tell you that it’s not about the machine but rather your knowledge and technique when it comes to identifying targets and digging them up properly. And when it comes to pinpointers, they can actually save time and frustration by allowing for more efficient recoveries.

So next time someone tries to discriminate against you based on your equipment choices in metal detecting, just remember that they’re missing out on what this hobby is really about – having fun and finding treasure!
