Coil Size

Small Coils: If you’re looking for precision over depth, then a small coil may be best suited for you. These coils range from 4-6 inches in diameter and allow you to pinpoint targets accurately. They work well on highly mineralized soil where large coils may struggle with interference from minerals in the ground.

Large Coils: If you want better depth penetration, then larger coils would be a better option. These come in sizes ranging from 8-15 inches or even bigger; however, they sacrifice some accuracy for maximum depth penetration.

It’s important to note that while larger coils can provide greater depth penetration, they also tend to miss smaller targets due to their lack of sensitivity compared to smaller ones. Moreover, larger-sized coils can also cause fatigue when used over extended periods because they tend to be heavier than small-sized ones.

Coil Shape

There are three primary shapes available – concentric, double-d elliptical (DD), and mono loops.

Concentric Coils: Concentric-shaped coils emit a cone-like search pattern which makes them ideal for pinpointing individual targets accurately. They also tend to perform well on high-mineralized soils because they can penetrate deep into the ground without losing much signal strength.

Double-D Elliptical Coils: These coils emit a blade-like search pattern and are ideal for covering large areas quickly. They perform well on mineralized soils, but their depth penetration isn’t as good as concentric-shaped ones.

Mono Loops: Mono loops emit an oval-shaped search pattern that can detect targets at great depths; they are the most sensitive of all three shapes and work well in high-mineralized soils. However, their precision is not as good as the other two shapes.
