8 Types of Discrimination We Need to Address for a More Equal Society

Discrimination is a topic that has been around for centuries, and despite the progress made in society, it still remains an issue. It can be defined as treating someone unfairly or differently because of their race, gender, age, sexual orientation, religion or any other personal characteristic. Discrimination not only affects individuals but can also impact entire communities leading to social and economic inequality.

Here are 8 types of discrimination:

1. Racism: This type of discrimination is based on race or ethnicity. People may experience racism due to their skin color or nationality.

2. Sexism: This type of discrimination is based on gender or sex. Women have historically experienced sexism when it comes to job opportunities and equal pay.

3. Ageism: This type of discrimination is based on age. Older people may experience this when they are passed over for employment opportunities due to their age.

4. Homophobia: This type of discrimination is based on sexual orientation towards people who identify as LGBTQ+. Those individuals may face harassment and bullying at school or work environments.

5. Ableism: This type of discrimination targets those with disabilities whether physical or mental health conditions impairments which hinder them from participating fully in everyday life activities such as education and employment opportunities

6.Religious Discrimination -this occurs when an individual faces prejudice because they belong to a particular religious group.

7.National Origin Discrimination- People can face National Origin Discrimination if they have characteristics associated with a specific country (e.g., language accents).

8.Colorism- Colorist attitudes are often perpetuated within minority groups themselves meaning lighter-skinned individuals receive more privileges than darker-skinned counterparts.

It’s important to recognize all forms of discrimination and take steps towards eliminating them from our societies entirely . We must strive for equality by educating ourselves about different cultures, religions ,and beliefs while embracing diversity instead of being afraid since we live in a world that thrives off differences- let’s celebrate them together.
