Will Smith: Actor, Musician, and Metal Detector

Will Smith: Actor, Musician, and Metal Detector?

When you hear the name Will Smith, you may think of his iconic roles in movies like Men in Black or The Pursuit of Happyness. You may also know him as a rapper with hits like “Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It” and “Miami.” But did you know that he’s also a metal detector enthusiast? That’s right, the Fresh Prince himself has been known to hit the beach with his trusty detector in hand.

So why does one of Hollywood’s biggest stars turn to metal detecting? For starters, it can be a relaxing and meditative activity. There’s something about combing through sand or dirt and discovering hidden treasures that can be both calming and exciting at the same time. And for someone like Will Smith who lives life in the fast lane, taking a break from the hustle and bustle to search for buried treasure can be a welcome escape.

But it’s not just about finding cool stuff (although that certainly doesn’t hurt). In an interview with Entertainment Tonight back in 2016, Smith shared that he enjoys metal detecting because it allows him to connect with people on a different level:

“I’ve always been really into artifacts and things so I’ve always had this little fascination with archaeology,” he said. “It connects me to history and to humanity in a really interesting way.”

And while he may not have uncovered any ancient artifacts just yet (that we know of), Smith has had some pretty impressive finds over the years. In fact, back in 2009 while vacationing in Hawaii with his family, he reportedly stumbled upon an old gold coin worth $5,000!

Of course, being Will Smith means that when you go metal detecting on public beaches there is bound to be some attention from fans. But rather than shying away from it all together or getting annoyed by selfie requests every five minutes (we’re looking at you, Justin Bieber), Smith tends to embrace the fanfare. In fact, he’s been known to give impromptu performances for onlookers while metal detecting, including a rendition of “Wild Wild West” during a trip to Dubai.

But let’s get down to brass tacks here: what kind of metal detector does Will Smith use? As it turns out, he’s a fan of the Minelab Excalibur II. According to the company’s website, this detector is specifically designed for use in saltwater environments (like beaches) and is able to detect targets up to 200 feet away. It also features advanced discrimination capabilities that can distinguish between junk metals and valuable targets like gold or silver.

And if you’re thinking about following in Will Smith’s footsteps and taking up metal detecting as a hobby (or maybe just want an excuse to wear one of those cool headphones), there are plenty of resources available online. From forums where enthusiasts swap tips and stories, to YouTube channels featuring metal detecting adventures around the world, there’s no shortage of information out there.

So there you have it – Will Smith: actor, musician, and metal detector enthusiast extraordinaire. Who knows what kind of treasures he’ll uncover next? And if you happen to run into him on your next beach vacation, don’t be afraid to say hi…you might just end up with a private concert!
