When I first started exploring underwater metal detecting, I quickly learned that not all coils are created equal. Traditional search coils used for land-based metal detecting aren’t suitable for use in water because they cannot handle the pressure and resistance of being submerged. Instead, you need a coil specifically designed to work well in aquatic environments.

One of the most important factors to consider when choosing a coil for underwater metal detecting is its size. For shallow waters or areas with lots of debris or trash targets, a smaller coil may be more effective.

Another factor to consider when selecting an underwater coil is its shape. The two most common shapes are round and elliptical. Round-shaped coils provide better depth penetration and coverage area while elliptical-shaped ones offer better sensitivity and maneuverability around obstacles.

Additionally, you’ll want to look at the frequency range of your detector’s searchcoil when considering a new one; higher frequencies will provide better discrimination capabilities allowing you to separate different types of metals from each other such as gold vs silver vs iron etc.

It’s also essential to choose a waterproof coil that can withstand immersion in saltwater without becoming damaged by corrosion over time. Some manufacturers have developed special materials that resist saltwater damage while retaining their detection capabilities even after prolonged exposure to seawater.

In my own experience with underwater metal detecting using various types of coils has been challenging yet rewarding. There have been occasions where I’ve had difficulty pinpointing precise locations due to poor signals caused by interference from nearby metal objects; however, using a smaller coil has helped me better isolate targets in these situations.
