The 1970s was a decade of great musical innovation and experimentation. It was during this period that a new genre emerged, which would later be known as hard rock music. At the forefront of this movement were bands like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, and Mountain.

Mountain was formed in Long Island, New York by Leslie West (guitar/vocals), Felix Pappalardi (bass), Steve Knight (keyboards), and Corky Laing (drums). They released their debut album “Climbing!” in 1970, which included their most famous song “Mississippi Queen”. The song became an instant hit and reached #21 on the US charts.

The band’s sound was unique because it combined elements of blues rock with heavy metal. Leslie West’s guitar playing style was heavily influenced by blues legends such as B.B King and Freddie King. Felix Pappalardi played bass guitar but also produced the albums for Cream including “Disraeli Gears” and “Wheels Of Fire”. He also helped shape Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run” album before his untimely death in 1983.

Mountain’s second album “Nantucket Sleighride,” released in 1971 continued their success with the title track reaching #17 on the US charts. The album showcased the band’s ability to create complex arrangements while maintaining a heavy sound. This artistic direction would become more apparent on subsequent albums like “Flowers Of Evil”, “Avalanche” and “Go For Your Life”.

In addition to being pioneers of hard rock music, Mountain is also remembered for their live performances. Their shows were loud, energetic and often lasted several hours long due to improvisational jam sessions between songs. Fans knew they were getting value for money when attending one of their concerts!

Despite having disbanded multiple times, Mountain’s music continues to inspire younger generations. Bands like Pearl Jam and Soundgarden have cited Mountain as a major influence on their sound.
