Types of Coils

Concentric Coils – These are also known as round coils because they have a circular shape. The outer ring transmits signals while the inner circle receives them. Concentric coils are excellent at pinpointing small targets but not as good at depth detection.

Double-D Coils – Double-D stands for “differential geometry.” This type of coil has two overlapping D-shaped loops that work together to transmit and receive signals simultaneously. They’re more effective than concentric coils when it comes to detecting larger targets at greater depths.

Size Matters

The size of your coil will determine how deep you can detect targets and how accurate your readings will be. Smaller coils tend to be more sensitive but less able to detect deeper targets than larger ones.

A general rule-of-thumb is that smaller-sized coils should be used in areas where there could be plenty of trash or iron debris on the ground surface like parks or playgrounds where children play with toys made from metals such as aluminum foil wrappers, pull-tabs from soda cans among others – these items usually give off low conductivity signals which can easily mask out other valuable finds if picked up by larger-sized searchcoils meant for deeper detection capabilities found on large beach stretches or treasure hunting sites with minimal ground interference.

Frequency

If you’re looking to hunt for gold nuggets, a higher frequency coil will be the best option as they’ll pick up even the smallest pieces of gold. However, if you’re searching for coins and artifacts that have been buried deep underground, then lower frequencies will work just fine.

Shape

Coils come in various shapes including elliptical and round. The shape of your coil will determine how efficient it is in picking up signals from the ground.

Elliptical coils – These are elongated searchcoils designed to cover more ground area per sweep than their circular counterparts which makes them highly effective when used on open spaces where there’s no interference from other sources such as power lines or electric fences. Elliptical coils also have an advantage over conventional round-shaped searchcoils because they allow detection even on uneven terrain without sacrificing sensitivity due to their ability to adapt according to changes in surface contours.

Round Coils – These are standard searchcoils that come with most detectors by default. Although not as effective as elliptical ones regarding coverage area per sweep, they still provide excellent results when it comes to finding small items hidden beneath layers of soil thanks mainly due its ease-of-use design concept which makes them great starter options for beginners who want an uncomplicated setup process before moving onto more advanced equipment choices down the road.

Coil Configuration

Another factor to consider when selecting a coil is its configuration type; mono vs. double-d configurations.

Mono Coil Configuration – A monocoil is a single loop coil that sends out a single frequency which makes it sensitive to both small and large objects in the ground. Mono coils are relatively simple to use, and they’re excellent at detecting small targets like gold nuggets.

Double-D Coil Configuration – Double-D coils have two overlapping loops, one for transmitting signals and the other for receiving them. They’re more effective than mono coils when it comes to detecting larger metallic targets such as antique coins or relics.
