Metal detecting has become a popular hobby among treasure hunters and history enthusiasts. One of the most important features of metal detectors is their audio response, which plays a vital role in identifying buried objects. In this article, we will discuss the basics of audio response and how it works in metal detecting.

What is Audio Response?

Audio response refers to the sounds produced by a metal detector when it detects a metal object. It can be heard through headphones or speakers attached to the device. The sound can vary depending on several factors such as the size, depth, and composition of the target.

How Does Audio Response Work?

When a metal detector comes across an object with metallic properties, it generates an electromagnetic field around that object. This process creates electrical signals that are sent back to the detector’s search coil.

The detector then interprets these signals based on its settings and produces an audible sound that indicates whether or not there is something valuable beneath the surface. The strength and frequency of this signal depend on various factors including soil mineralization, target composition, distance from ground surface, etc.

Types of Audio Responses

There are two types of audio responses commonly used in modern-day metal detectors: Tone ID (Identification) & Visual ID (Identification).

Tone Identification:

In tone identification mode, different tones are assigned to different types or categories of metals detected by your device. Here’s what you should know about each tone:

1) Low Tone – Indicates Ferrous Targets:
Ferrous targets refer to metals containing iron like nails or bolts; they produce low-frequency sounds when detected by metal detectors making them easy for users to identify.

2) High Tone – Indicates Non-Ferrous Targets:
Non-ferrous targets like gold coins or silver jewelry produce high-frequency sounds when detected by your device; they are also easier to distinguish from ferrous targets using high tones frequencies.

3) Mixed Tones – Indicates Mixed Targets:
Mixed targets are those that may contain both ferrous and non-ferrous metals. They produce a combination of high and low-frequency sounds when detected, making them harder to identify.

Visual Identification:

In visual identification mode, metal detectors display the type of object detected on an LCD screen or LED lights through symbols or numbers. Some examples include “iron” for ferrous targets, “gold” for gold objects, “copper” for copper items etc.

Visual ID helps users distinguish between different types of objects more easily especially when searching in areas with mixed targets where tone id might not be as effective.

Adjusting Audio Response Settings

It’s essential to adjust your device’s audio response settings according to the environment you’re searching in and the type of target you’re looking for. Most detectors come with custom audio settings allowing users to control volume levels, tone frequencies, sensitivity levels etc., so they can make sure their device is optimized for their search needs.

For example; if you’re detecting in highly mineralized soil conditions, reduce your detector’s sensitivity level & choose a lower frequency tone so that it doesn’t pick up false signals from minerals in the ground. Alternatively, if you’re scanning near saltwater beaches or wet sand areas where signal interference is common due to water content then increasing the sensitivity level will help improve detection accuracy rates.
