If you ask anyone about Will Smith, the first thing that comes to mind is his successful acting career in Hollywood. However, he is much more than just an actor. He is also a rapper, producer, and philanthropist.
Early Life
Born on September 25, 1968 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Willard Carroll Smith Jr., commonly known as Will Smith grew up with his mother Caroline Bright and father Willard Carroll Sr. His parents separated when he was only 13 years old.
Smith attended Overbrook High School where he met Jeff Townes who later became his musical partner DJ Jazzy Jeff. The two formed a hip-hop duo called DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince and released their first album “Rock the House” in 1987.
Music Career
The duo’s second album “He’s the DJ, I’m the Rapper” was released in 1988 which included their hit single “Parents Just Don’t Understand.” The song earned them their first Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance in 1989.
In addition to winning another Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance in 1992 for their hit song “Summertime,” they also won several MTV Video Music Awards throughout the late 80s and early 90s.
Acting Career
After experiencing success with music, Smith decided to pursue acting and landed a starring role in the popular television series “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” from 1990-1996 where he played a fictionalized version of himself.
His breakout performance came with his role as Detective Mike Lowrey alongside Martin Lawrence in Michael Bay’s action-comedy film “Bad Boys” (1995) which led him to become one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars. He went on to star in numerous blockbuster films like “Independence Day” (1996), “Men In Black” (1997), and “Ali” (2001).
Smith has been nominated for five Golden Globe Awards, two Academy Awards, and has won four Grammy Awards throughout his career.
Philanthropy
In addition to his successful entertainment career, Smith is also known for his philanthropic work. He and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith founded the Will and Jada Smith Family Foundation in 1996 which supports inner-city youth organizations.
The foundation provides funding for a variety of programs that focus on education, health, sustainability, and social development. In 2006, they launched the Will & Jada Smith Family Business Initiative which helps to develop minority-owned businesses.
