Ghost towns, the abandoned remnants of once-bustling communities, are fascinating for many reasons. One of the most famous ghost towns in the United States is Bodie, California. This former gold-mining town was once home to thousands of people seeking their fortune in the late 1800s. Today, it’s preserved as a State Historic Park and attracts visitors who want to see what life was like during the Gold Rush era. Metal detectors are allowed within certain areas of the park with permission and can uncover silver dollars or other valuable items that have been buried beneath the surface for decades.
Another well-known ghost town is Centralia, Pennsylvania. What makes this community unique is that it has been abandoned due to an underground coal fire burning since 1962! While not technically a “ghost town” as there are still some residents living there today despite being ordered by state officials to evacuate due to hazardous fumes; however metal detecting around this area requires proper protective gear due to potentially harmful gases which have led some enthusiasts to call it one of America’s spookiest places!
Closer to my heart is St Elmo Colorado near Buena Vista CO where I grew up near by . It also started out as a mining town but quickly turned into more when railroads came through during Colorado’s mining boom years (1875-1900). The railroad helped turn St Elmo into one of Chaffee County’s liveliest communities with over 150 buildings including hotels saloon post office general store etc.. By World War II most had moved on leaving behind empty buildings strewn about forested hillsides surrounding Mt Princeton hot springs resort nearby . Since then nature has taken over and been left relatively untouched making it a popular spot for metal detectorists who come in search of old coins or other artifacts.
