Metal Detecting Success: Choosing the Right Detector for Mineralized Ground

When it comes to metal detecting, choosing the right detector is essential to success. One of the critical factors in selecting a detector is its ability to handle mineralized ground. Two common types of detectors used for this purpose are Very Low-Frequency (VLF) and Pulse Induction (PI) detectors.

VLF detectors are known for their sensitivity towards smaller targets and have excellent discrimination capabilities that can distinguish between different metals. They use two coils, a transmitter coil that sends out an electromagnetic field and a receiver coil that detects any changes in the field caused by metallic objects beneath the surface.

One significant advantage of VLF detectors is their ability to discriminate against trash items such as bottle caps or aluminum foil while still detecting valuable targets such as coins or jewelry. Additionally, VLF detectors are generally more affordable than PI detectors.

However, VLF machines struggle with highly mineralized soil conditions like saltwater beaches or areas with high iron content. The minerals in these soils create electrical interference which can cause false signals leading to missed targets or excessive noise pollution.

On the other hand, PI metal detectors work differently from VLF machines; they emit short pulses of current into the ground before measuring how long it takes for them to return after bouncing off metallic objects underground. This technology allows them to detect deeper targets at greater depths than most VLFs since they can bypass electromagnetic interference caused by soil minerals.

PI machines excel in challenging environments where traditional VLFs fail because they’re not affected by mineralization issues found on saltwater beaches or highly mineralized soils. However, they don’t offer much discrimination capacity compared to modern-day VLFs- making it harder for users when searching through sites littered with junk metals like bottle caps and pull tabs.

In summary, both PI and VFL metal detecting technologies have their advantages and drawbacks depending on your specific needs as a user. If you’re looking for deeper depth penetration without worrying about sensitive electrolytic soil conditions, PI machines are the way to go. However, if you’re searching for small targets in high trash areas, VLFs may be your best bet.
