In 1945, Gerhard Fischer developed what is believed to be the first practical portable metal detector. Fischer, an electrical engineer from Germany who immigrated to America in the early 1930s, had previously worked on various inventions such as radio direction finders and mine-detecting equipment during World War II.
Fischer’s invention used vacuum tubes and produced an audible signal when it detected metal objects. He called his device “Metalloscope” and began selling it under his newly formed company name “Fisher Research Laboratory.” The Metalloscope was marketed towards treasure hunters looking for lost coins or artifacts buried underground.

Today there are dozens if not hundreds of different brands and models available on the market catering to various budgets & needs from novice hobbyists all way up professional archaeologists. Prices can range from under $50 for entry-level models to over $10,000 for high-end specialized machines.
