Meet Pearce Quigley: The Expert Metal Detectorist with Over 30 Years of Experience
Metal detecting has become a popular hobby for both history buffs and treasure hunters alike. For Pearce Quigley, metal detecting has been more than just a hobby – it’s been his passion for over 30 years. With his vast knowledge and experience in the field, he has become a well-known figure in the metal detecting community.
Quigley first discovered his love for metal detecting at the age of 14 when he found a silver sixpence while walking on the beach with his family. He was immediately hooked and began searching for more treasures whenever he could. Over time, his collection grew, and so did his skills.
After decades of experience under his belt, Quigley is now considered to be an expert in metal detecting. He has made some incredible finds throughout the years, including ancient coins from Roman Britain dating back to AD 60-70s, as well as medieval rings from the 13th century.
When asked about tips for beginners who are interested in starting their own metal detector journey, Quigley had this to say: “Start small and learn your machine inside out before moving up to bigger things. Research sites carefully – Google Maps can help you find potential areas of interest like old churches or schools that have since closed down.”
He also advises newbies to invest in quality equipment: “Don’t go cheap on your machine! You get what you pay for.” According to him, many people make this mistake early on because they’re not sure if they’ll stick with it or not but investing in good equipment will make all the difference.
In addition to being an avid detectorist himself, Quigley is also a member of several local clubs where he enjoys sharing tips and stories with other enthusiasts. He even runs workshops teaching others how to properly use their machines effectively.
Despite all of his successes over the years though there have been losses too – sometimes items he’s found are claimed by museums or disappear entirely. But Quigley remains undeterred, saying that “the thrill of the hunt is what keeps me going.”
As our conversation came to a close, I asked him what his favorite thing about metal detecting was. He replied without hesitation: “The history. Every piece you find has a story behind it – whether it’s a lost treasure or just an old penny – and being able to piece those stories together is incredibly rewarding.”
