Interview with Leonardo DiCaprio: His Love for Metal Detecting

Leonardo DiCaprio is a world-renowned actor, producer, and environmental activist. But there’s one hobby he enjoys that many people might not know about – metal detecting.

In this exclusive interview, we sat down with Leo to discuss his passion for the hobby, how it helps him unwind from the busy entertainment industry lifestyle, and what treasures he’s uncovered over the years.

Q: So Leo, when did you first get into metal detecting?

A: It was actually during the filming of The Revenant in 2015. We were filming in remote locations in Canada and I needed something to do during my downtime. One of our crew members had a metal detector and I started using it to pass the time. I quickly became addicted!

Q: What is it about metal detecting that you enjoy so much?

A: There are a few things actually. First off, it’s very meditative for me. When I’m out there with my headphones on listening for signals, everything else just fades away. It’s a great way to clear my head and decompress after long days on set or traveling.

Secondly, there’s always an element of surprise when you finally uncover something hidden beneath the surface of the ground. You never know what you’re going to find! And thirdly, it gets me outside in nature which is something I really appreciate.

Q: Have you found anything particularly interesting or valuable while metal detecting?

A: Yes! Over the years I’ve found some really cool stuff like old coins from different eras, vintage jewelry pieces and even Civil War bullets which was pretty incredible given where we live (Los Angeles). However one of my most memorable finds was an old harmonica that belonged to Abraham Lincoln himself! That was definitely a thrilling moment.

Q: Wow – finding an artifact belonging to such a prominent historical figure must have been amazing! Do you often research the history of objects you find?

A: Absolutely. In fact, I think that’s one of the most rewarding aspects of metal detecting – discovering pieces of history and learning about their significance. It’s fascinating to imagine the stories behind each item and who they belonged to.

Q: Have you ever gone on any metal detecting trips or adventures outside of California?

A: Yes, I’ve traveled to a few different states in search of treasures. One trip that stands out was when I visited Virginia with my friend who is also a fellow detectorist. We went to some old Civil War battlefields and found some really intriguing items like uniform buttons, belt buckles, and even a bayonet!

Another time we went up to Oregon where we searched for gold nuggets in some rivers and streams. Unfortunately we didn’t strike it rich but it was still an unforgettable experience.

Q: That sounds like quite the adventure! What type of gear do you use when metal detecting?

A: I usually bring along my trusty Garrett AT Pro metal detector which has served me well over the years. It’s waterproof so I can take it into shallow water which adds another dimension to the hobby. For digging I have a Lesche digging tool which is great for cutting through tough soil without damaging artifacts.

And lastly, headphones are crucial because they help block out ambient noise so you can hear faint signals more clearly.

Q: Are there any tips or advice you’d give someone just starting out with metal detecting?

A: Definitely! First off, do your research on local laws regarding metal detecting in your area as well as where it’s appropriate to detect (e.g., public parks vs private property). You don’t want to get into legal trouble or upset anyone by accidentally trespassing!

Secondly, invest in quality equipment from reputable brands like Garrett or Minelab because cheap detectors often break easily and won’t pick up signals as well.

Lastly, be patient and persistent. It can take a while to learn how to read the signals from your detector and digging up trash is just part of the process. But when you do find something worthwhile it’s all worth it!

Q: Lastly, we have to ask – what’s next for Leonardo DiCaprio in terms of upcoming projects?

A: Well, I’m excited to be producing an adaptation of David Grann’s book “Killers of the Flower Moon” which will star Robert De Niro and myself. It’s a true crime story set in 1920s Oklahoma involving murders of Osage Native Americans who had become wealthy thanks to oil deposits discovered on their land. It’s a really interesting and important story that needs to be told.

Other than that, I’ll continue working with my foundation (The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation) on environmental initiatives such as combatting climate change and protecting biodiversity.
