Charlize Theron is a South African actress, producer, and philanthropist. She has received numerous awards throughout her career, including an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award.

Early Life
Charlize was born on August 7th, 1975 in Benoni, South Africa. Her parents both worked in the construction industry. Charlize grew up on her family’s farm outside of Johannesburg. When she was 13 years old, her father died in an incident that involved gun violence.

Career Beginnings
After winning a local modeling competition at age 16, Charlize moved to Milan to pursue modeling full-time. However, after struggling with the industry’s demands on her appearance and size expectations for models at that time, she decided to move to New York City and try acting instead.

She landed her first film role in “Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest” (1995) but it wasn’t until she starred alongside Keanu Reeves and Al Pacino in “The Devil’s Advocate” (1997) that she gained wider recognition.

Breakthrough Roles
In 2003, Charlize starred as Aileen Wuornos – a real-life serial killer – in the film “Monster”. She underwent significant physical transformation for the role including gaining weight and shaving off her eyebrows which ultimately resulted in an Oscar win for Best Actress.

Philanthropy
Alongside acting work Charilze has also been involved with activism efforts within several charities like PETA & One campaign.
In 2008 she founded the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project which aims to help prevent HIV/AIDS among African youth by supporting and funding programs that provide education, healthcare and community support.
