The world’s oceans are facing a crisis of unprecedented proportions. 2. Seabin Project:
The Seabin Project is an ingenious invention aimed at collecting floating trash from marinas, yacht clubs, ports, and other enclosed water bodies where waste often accumulates due to tidal movements or human activity. The Seabin itself resembles a garbage bin placed underwater on marina pontoons or docks; it sucks in surface water along with any floating debris using an electric pump before filtering out the trash into a removable bag inside the device while returning clean water back into the ocean.

Launched in 2017 by Alex Schulze and Andrew Cooper after witnessing immense amounts of plastic during their surf trips around Bali’s coastline, 4ocean operates under a unique business model: they fund their ocean cleanup efforts by selling bracelets made from recycled materials such as glass bottles and old tires collected during beach cleanups worldwide. For every bracelet sold, one pound (0.45 kg) of trash is removed from the ocean. Their team comprises full-time captains and crews who actively clean coastlines, rivers, and oceans while organizing community cleanup events to raise awareness.
4. The Trash Wheel:
The Water Wheel or “Mr. Trash Wheel” is an innovative solution designed specifically to combat plastic pollution in urban waterways such as rivers and canals. Powered by solar energy, this floating device uses a combination of conveyor belts and rotating screens to collect garbage from the water’s surface before transferring it into dumpsters on board. This technology has proved highly effective, with Mr. Trash Wheel alone removing over 1,000 tons (907 metric tonnes) of trash from Baltimore’s Inner Harbor since its installation in 2014.
5. Ghost Fishing:
Ghost fishing refers to abandoned or lost fishing gear that continues trapping marine life indiscriminately for years, contributing significantly to ocean pollution and threatening marine ecosystems’ health. Several organizations are dedicated to tackling this problem head-on through initiatives like underwater cleanups and retrieval programs for ghost nets using specially trained divers equipped with cutting tools or remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). These efforts not only remove harmful debris but also prevent further damage caused by entanglement.
6. The Great Bubble Barrier:
The Great Bubble Barrier focuses on preventing plastic waste from entering our oceans in the first place by employing a unique bubble curtain system installed at river mouths or other strategic locations where large amounts of plastic accumulate due to current patterns. By releasing a continuous stream of bubbles across the water column, plastics are redirected towards collection points for removal while allowing fish and other marine organisms safe passage underneath the barrier.
7. Marine Litter Cleanup:
Marine Litter Cleanup is an initiative that utilizes artificial intelligence (AI)-powered drones equipped with cameras capable of detecting floating debris even under challenging weather conditions or low visibility situations like foggy days or at night. Once identified, these drones guide autonomous boats toward the trash, allowing for efficient and remote cleanup operations in hard-to-reach areas.
