When it comes to metal detecting, one of the most commonly found items is undoubtedly coins. And among these coins, the penny stands out as a favorite for many enthusiasts. But have you ever wondered about the composition of pennies? Specifically, what are they made of and how has it evolved over time?

In this article, we will explore the fascinating history of penny composition and focus on one significant change that occurred in 1982 when zinc replaced copper as the primary metal used in penny production.

Before we delve into that transition, let’s take a step back and understand the earlier compositions of pennies.

Early Penny Compositions:

The first United States pennies were introduced in 1793 and were known as Large Cents due to their size compared to today’s coins. These Large Cents were primarily made from pure copper.

However, due to rising costs associated with producing such large coins from solid copper, a new design was introduced in 1857. This design featured a smaller-sized cent with a mixture of metals called “bronze.” The bronze composition consisted of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc.

The bronze composition lasted until World War II when copper became scarce due to its vital use in military applications. To conserve valuable resources during wartime, pennies produced between 1943-1946 had an interesting story behind their composition.

War Time Composition:

During this period, pennies were minted using steel coated with zinc. Due to their metallic properties, these coins are often referred to as “steel cents” or “war nickels.” While they maintained their familiar size and appearance, they lacked the traditional reddish-brown color typically associated with copper—instead appearing silver or gray due to their steel core.

Post-War Transition:

After World War II ended, there was no longer a need for conserving resources through alternative compositions. Copper once again became the primary metal used in penny production, and this continued until 1982.

The Transition to Zinc:

In 1982, a significant change occurred with the composition of pennies. The cost of producing copper coins had risen significantly due to inflation, making it impractical to continue using solid copper for penny production.

To address this issue, the United States Mint made a crucial decision. They began minting pennies with a new composition—97.5% zinc and only 2.5% copper—resulting in what we know today as “zinc pennies.”

Why Zinc?

Zinc is an ideal replacement for copper due to its low cost and abundant availability compared to other metals. Additionally, zinc possesses anti-corrosive properties that help protect the coin from deterioration over time.

However, there was one downside to this transition—the appearance of these new zinc pennies changed drastically compared to their predecessors.

Appearance Differences:

While earlier pennies had a warm reddish-brown hue due to their high copper content, the introduction of zinc caused newer pennies’ appearance to shift towards a more silver-like coloration.

This change in color can be attributed to both the reduced amount of copper in the alloy and oxidation processes. Over time, as these zinc-based coins are exposed to air and moisture, they undergo surface oxidation that forms a thin layer of dull gray or white corrosion called “zinc oxide.”

Coin Collectors’ Concerns:

The introduction of zinc into penny composition raised concerns among avid coin collectors who appreciated traditional designs and sought out specific years or mint marks for their collections.

To address these concerns without compromising on cost efficiency or ease of manufacturing process changes across all mints simultaneously would have been impractical. Therefore, during 1982-2008 (with exception), two types of cents were produced: bronze cents pre-1982 (95% copper) and post-1982 zinc cents.

However, it’s important to note that while the outer layer of these newer pennies may appear different due to oxidation, their core still contains copper. So even though they are referred to as “zinc pennies,” they do have a small amount of copper within them.

Recent Developments:

In 2010, the United States Mint made an effort to address some concerns by introducing a new penny design called the “Shield Cent.” While the composition remained unchanged—97.5% zinc and 2.5% copper—the reverse side featured a redesigned shield with more prominent lettering and enhanced detail.

This redesign aimed to provide collectors with something new and visually appealing while maintaining the cost-saving benefits of using zinc in penny production.
