1. The Staffordshire Hoard
In 2009, a lucky metal detectorist named Terry Herbert unearthed one of the largest hoards of Anglo-Saxon gold ever found in England – The Staffordshire Hoard. Located in a field near Lichfield, Staffordshire, this incredible discovery consisted of over 3,500 pieces including intricate weaponry and beautifully crafted jewelry dating back to the 7th century AD. Valued at £3.285 million ($4.2 million), it is now displayed at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery.
2. The Crosby Garrett Helmet
While searching a field in Cumbria, UK in 2010, a detectorist stumbled upon an extraordinary artifact – The Crosby Garrett Helmet. This Roman cavalry helmet from the late 2nd or early 3rd century AD was remarkably preserved and adorned with exquisite bronze facial features and decorative motifs. It fetched a staggering £2 million ($2.56 million) at auction.
3. The Hoxne Hoard
Discovered by Eric Lawes on his friend’s farmland in Suffolk, England in 1992, the Hoxne Hoard ranks among Britain’s most significant archaeological finds to date. Comprising over 15,000 late Roman coins along with numerous silver tableware pieces and other precious objects from the early 5th century AD, its value exceeded £1 million ($1.28 million). Today it resides at the British Museum.
4. The Rosetta Stone
One cannot discuss valuable discoveries without mentioning the Rosetta Stone – an essential key to deciphering Egyptian hieroglyphs and unlocking the secrets of ancient Egypt. In 1799, during Napoleon’s Egyptian campaign, a soldier named Pierre-François Bouchard stumbled upon this granite slab in the town of Rosetta (Rashid). The stone bears an inscription written in three scripts: Ancient Greek, Egyptian hieroglyphs, and Demotic script. It is now held at the British Museum.
5. The Cuerdale Hoard
In 1840, workmen digging a trench near Preston, England made an astonishing discovery – The Cuerdale Hoard. This Viking treasure trove contained over 8,600 items including coins from various regions and periods, jewelry, hack silver (silver objects used for currency), as well as weaponry dating back to the late 9th century AD. Today it is exhibited at the British Museum.
6. The Saddle Ridge Hoard
In California’s Gold Country in 2013, a couple was walking their dog when they spotted something unusual protruding from the ground beneath a tree – eight rusty cans filled with gold coins! Dubbed “The Saddle Ridge Hoard,” this cache consisted of nearly 1,500 gold coins minted between 1847 and 1894 with an estimated value exceeding $10 million. To this day, no one knows how or why it ended up buried there.
7. Roman Mosaic Villa
In southern England’s countryside lies what might be considered every metal detectorist’s dream find – a Roman mosaic villa discovered by Luke Irwin in his own backyard! While installing electricity cables on his property in Wiltshire in 2005, Irwin noticed some pottery shards that led to further excavation revealing stunning Roman mosaic floors dating back around AD 175-220. This remarkable archaeological site has since been preserved and can be visited by appointment.
8. King John’s Lost Treasure
Legend has it that King John lost numerous valuable crown jewels while crossing the marshy Wash estuary in England in 1216. In 2016, after years of searching and with the help of metal detecting technology, Kevin Duckett discovered a medieval gold coin known as an “ange” near the likely location. Although not a treasure trove in itself, this find revived hope that more treasures may still be waiting to be discovered.
