3. Density Test:

To conduct a density test, you will need a precise scale that can measure small weights accurately. Start by weighing the item found while metal detecting on the scale. Next, fill a container with water and record its weight separately. Carefully place the object into the water-filled container without spilling any liquid. Measure and record the new weight.

Now comes some simple calculations: subtract the weight of the water-filled container from its combined weight with the detected object inside it (object + water + container). The resulting value represents your object’s apparent loss in weight when submerged in water.

Finally, divide this apparent loss in weight by the volume of displaced water (which equals to final – initial weights) to calculate your object’s density. Compare this value to known densities of various metals to make an educated guess about its composition.

4. Acid Test:
The acid test is commonly used for differentiating between gold and other yellowish metals like brass or bronze since these alloys may resemble gold at first glance. This test involves applying nitric acid onto a hidden part of your find and observing its reaction.

Before conducting this test, ensure you are wearing protective gloves and eyewear as acids can be hazardous if mishandled. Apply a few drops of nitric acid onto an inconspicuous area of your find using a glass dropper or cotton swab (avoid direct contact with skin). Observe any color change or effervescence:

– Gold: If there is no reaction or discoloration after applying nitric acid, it suggests that the object contains gold. Pure gold is resistant to most acids.
– Brass/Bronze: If the item turns green or produces a bluish-green color, it indicates the presence of copper (common in brass and bronze).
