In this article, we will explore some common types of metals and alloys that metal detectors often encounter.

1. Ferrous Metals:
Ferrous metals contain iron as their primary element. These metals are usually magnetic and include materials such as iron, steel, and certain types of stainless steel. They are prone to rusting if not properly maintained. When using a metal detector, ferrous metals often give off strong signals due to their high conductivity.

2. Non-Ferrous Metals:
Non-ferrous metals do not contain iron and are generally non-magnetic. This category includes popular finds like copper, brass, aluminum, lead, zinc, nickel, tin, and bronze. Non-ferrous items tend to produce weaker signals on metal detectors compared to ferrous ones due to their lower electrical conductivity.

3. Precious Metals:

– Magnet test: Utilize a magnet to determine if the object contains ferrous (attracted) or non-ferrous (not attracted) metals.

– Conductivity test: Measure the electrical conductivity of an object using a metal detector. Non-ferrous metals will typically have higher conductivity than ferrous ones.

– Visual inspection: Observe the color, texture, and overall appearance of an item to get clues about its composition. For example, copper has a distinct reddish-brown hue.
