The first and most common method used for depth detection is called conductivity-based discrimination. SMF metal detectors emit several frequencies simultaneously and analyze their responses separately or collectively. This allows them to provide more accurate information about both shallow and deep targets.

Aside from these methods, some manufacturers have implemented visual indicators on their metal detectors that display numerical values representing estimated depths or utilize audio tones that vary depending on how deep a target is buried.
