At its core, a silencer is designed to reduce the noise produced by a firearm when it is discharged. This reduction in sound intensity is achieved through a series of mechanical processes within the device. To understand how silencers work, let’s delve into their construction. Silencers consist of several components including an outer tube, baffles or expansion chambers inside the tube, and an end cap. When a gunshot occurs without a silencer attached to the firearm, the expanding gases escape directly into the air all at once after leaving the muzzle of the gun. This rapid release creates a shockwave which results in the characteristic loud noise associated with gunfire.
