False signals are readings on your metal detector that appear to indicate the presence of a target when there is none. Distinguishing false signals from true ones is crucial for successful metal detecting. Common causes of false signals include mineralization in the soil, electromagnetic interference, hot rocks, trash or iron junk, and even certain weather conditions. Mineralization interference occurs when minerals in the ground disrupt the detector’s signal, leading to erratic readings. Electromagnetic interference from power lines or electronic devices can also cause false alerts. Hot rocks are natural rocks containing minerals that can trigger your detector but do not hold any valuable metal.

To reduce false signals while metal detecting, it’s essential to understand and utilize discrimination settings on your detector effectively. Discrimination allows you to filter out specific types of metals based on their conductivity levels, helping you ignore unwanted targets like iron nails or foil wrappers.
